Hardy Beasts

‘Come on,’ shouted the farmer, calling the cattle in for their afternoon treat. All of a sudden, the group in the distance looked up, their ears pricked at the noise they heard every afternoon, one which they knew, without hesitation, the meaning of. The quiet, sunny afternoon was soon shattered with the rumbling of multiple hairy, mostly horned beasts running down the hillside, their red hair blowing in the wind and their hooves kicking up small plumes of dust, their enthusiasm for the call palpably clear.

Upon reaching the feeders, they tucked into the fresh grains that the farmer had poured into the troughs, their lips and hairy muzzles soon coated in seeds as they ate as quickly as they could in case their neighbour might shunt them out of the way. All except one. A little black, timid, almost frightened-looking heifer, stood at the back. Even from a distance we could see her black eyes were wide open, her head twitching as she stood on guard, ready to run away at any moment. After a few minutes she tentatively made her way towards the feeders, before jumping back again, one look from one of the others enough to shoo her away.

This terrified, cowering, near scraggily wee beast was Ronnie.
